One in nine child deaths worldwide. Nearly all of them preventable.
Diarrhoeal diseases account for one in nine child deaths worldwide, making diarrhoea the second leading cause of death among children under the age of five. SFH’s response combines prevention at the household level (safe water, safe storage, hygiene) with rapid case management at the community level (ORS and zinc) to keep children alive, then keep them healthy.
Three interventions, working together.
SFH’s diarrhoeal-disease response is one of the most cost-effective programmes in public health: clean drinking water at home, safe storage, and the right first-line treatment within hours of onset.
Household water treatment
Point-of-use water disinfection with WaterGuard Plus, the household solution SFH distributes through Access shops and community partners to keep stored drinking water free of harmful bacteria and protozoa.
Safe Water System
A water-quality intervention combining simple, inexpensive technology with behaviour-change communication to make stored water safe through disinfection at the point of use, launched in Nigeria in 2004.
ORS and zinc case management
Rapid access to oral rehydration salts and zinc supplementation at the community level: the WHO-recommended first-line treatment for childhood diarrhoea, scaled through SFH’s community case-management partners.
