AGILE Project – Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment
Ongoing
The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project is implemented in selected states across Nigeria, including Nasarawa, Borno, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Plateau, and Ekiti. In Nasarawa State, the Society for Family Health (SFH) leads implementation, targeting in-school adolescent girls aged 10 to 20. The project aims to empower girls through education, mentorship, and life skills training while addressing socio-cultural and economic barriers. Implementation spans both rural and urban communities within all 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state, namely Akwanga, Awe, Doma, Karu, Keana, Keffi, Kokona, Lafia, Nasarawa, Obi and Toto aligning with national efforts to promote gender equity in education.
Key Approach and Objectives
AGILE seeks to improve access, retention, and completion of secondary education for adolescent girls through targeted community engagement and system strengthening. SFH employs a gender-responsive and inclusive approach that emphasizes stakeholder collaboration, policy advocacy, and peer mentorship. Interventions include capacity building of teachers and mentors, delivery of context-relevant life skills and financial literacy curricula, and the creation of safe learning environments in schools. AGILE also addresses harmful norms, early marriage, and gender-based violence by equipping girls with tools to build self-esteem, agency, and future opportunities. The project is structured to support long-term empowerment and educational advancement for adolescent girls.
Notable Achievements/Success Metrics
Since launch, SFH has recorded significant milestones in Nasarawa State. In February 2025, advocacy visits were conducted to key ministries to introduce the AGILE project and gain strategic support for implementation. A stakeholder inception and co-creation workshop, held from February 3–5, 2025, which facilitated discussion on the drivers, barriers, and opportunities for life skills education. In March 2025, a 4-day manual development and validation workshop was held with participation from government, educators, and civil society to co-develop a culturally relevant and implementable life skills manual. In April, 2025, a comprehensive 5-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop was conducted to equip master trainers with the competencies to cascade interventions. By May 2025, 24 qualified master trainers were selected and deployed across six LGAs: Toto, Akwanga, Keffi, Awe, Keana, and Lafia.
Project Status
The AGILE project is ongoing currently at the stage of cascading training to mentors across selected secondary schools in all 13 LGAs in Nasarawa State.
