Supporting Last-Mile Delivery of Commodities & Capacity Strengthening of PHC Staff for Quality Improvement

Ongoing
This project seeks to optimise last-mile delivery of essential health commodities and strengthen the capacity of Primary Health Care (PHC) staff to improve quality of care across 60 selected PHC facilities in Jigawa State. It combines practical skills training with systems strengthening, standardisation of procedures, and ongoing mentorship to drive sustainable improvements in supply chain management, data use, and client service delivery.
Implementation Locations:
Jigawa State – 14 LGAs:
Kazaure, Yankwashi, Roni, Hadeja, Kafin Hausa, Kaugama, Gumel, Maigatari, Sule Tankarkar, Gagarawa, Dutse, Ringim, Birnin Kudu, Kiyawa
 Key Objectives:
  • Enhance the efficiency of last-mile commodity distribution
  • Strengthen health workers’ capacity in supply-chain management and data utilisation
  • Standardise PHC service delivery using embedded standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Key Strategies:
  • Practical Trainings:
118 health workers trained across four clusters (Dutse, Kazaure, Hadeja, Gumel) on Client-Based Records Management (CBRM) and smart filing to improve documentation and tracking
  • Supply Chain Workshops:
Focused on forecasting, quantification, stock tracking, and data visualisation
  • SOP Deployment:
SOPs for infection prevention, commodity management, and client record-keeping rolled out and embedded with onsite orientation
  • Supportive Supervision:
Joint facility visits with government officials to reinforce best practices and assess progress
Notable Achievements / Success Metrics:
  • CBRM Knowledge Gains (Pre- & Post-Test):
    Hadeja: +58% Gumel: +53% Kazaure: +51% Dutse: +45%
Average knowledge gain: 51% across all clusters
  • Improved Data Use:
Facilities now systematically capture and use client records to support follow-up and service continuity
