Project Title: Research on Scale-up of Hormonal IUD in New and Emerging Markets (SHINE) project
Ongoing
The Research on Scale-up of Hormonal IUD in New and Emerging Markets (SHINE) Project, implemented in partnership with FHI360, aims to support the scale-up of hormonal IUDs (HIUDs) in Nigeria. It consists of three complementary studies:
(1) An exploratory study examining the interchangeability of single-handed and two-handed HIUD inserters to inform provider training and certification, implemented in Kano and Oyo.
(2) A mixed-method study documenting the rollout and scale-up of hormonal IUDs using secondary data extraction of FP data from NHMIS, HIUD adopter surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions amongst health providers and key stakeholders in Oyo, Bauchi, Nasarawa, and Ebonyi.
(3) An intervention study evaluating the effectiveness of digital didactic training compared to traditional didactic training for providers on hormonal IUDs, implemented in Delta and Enugu.
Implementation Locations: Oyo, Kano, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Delta, and Enugu
- Key approach and objectives
The primary objective is to generate evidence to support the scale-up of Hormonal IUDs (HIUDs) in Nigeria by exploring methods of introduction, training, and implementation. The project investigates the interchangeability of inserter types (single-handed and two-handed), documents rollout & implementation using mixed methods, and evaluates the effectiveness of digital versus traditional training for providers. It uses both primary and secondary data collection, employing a mixed-method approach utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data collection.
- Surveys with adopters of HIUD in the mixed-method study
- In-depth interviews (IDIs) with HIUD providers across the three studies.
- Key-informant interviews (KIIs) with key stakeholders.
- Focused group discussions (FDGs) in the mixed-method study.
- Data extraction of FP data from National Health Management Information System (NHMIS) in different studies
- Notable achievements/success metrics
- Successfully implemented the inserter study in Kano and Oyo, including IDIs and KIIs with providers and stakeholders.
- Supported data management and analysis and generated results for this exploratory study, which has been disseminated to the Family Health Department of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMOH/SW) and in the 8th Nigeria Family Planning Conference, sparking valuable discussions amongst experts and stakeholders.
- Achieved a significant milestone by completing 1,218 surveys with H-IUD adopters and 24 in-depth interviews, providing valuable insights into client motivations and provider perspectives for hormonal IUD use and generating a participant pool to serve as the foundation for a subsequent study.
- Secured the Longitudinal Investigation of Dynamics of IUD Use in Africa (LIDIA) grant to follow up with participants from the SHINE mixed-methods study.
- Implemented the first phase of the training intervention study in partnership with SFH COF (Delta) and CHAI COF (Enugu), generating early findings from 30 clinical observations and 30 provider interviews to assess a comprehensive analysis of two H-IUD training models: Digital Training (SFH COF) and Traditional In-Person Training (CHAI COF).
