Paediatric Breakthrough Partnership holds workshop on Integration of Community PMTCT, Paediatric and Adolescent HIV Interventions

Nigeria remains one of the countries with the highest burden of paediatric HIV, with an estimated 140,000 children under 14 living with the virus. Despite significant progress, gaps in early diagnosis, treatment access, and stigma continue to impede the goal of eliminating HIV in children. To address these challenges, Society for Family Health (SFH), through its Paediatric Breakthrough Partnership (PBP) project, is holding a two-day workshop on the Integration of Community PMTCT, Paediatric and Adolescent HIV Interventions into the primary health care facilities in Rivers State from April 10–11, 2025.  The workshop aims to integrate the community component of the PBP project into the existing framework of the primary health care system in the River State Ministry of Health and also ensure the continued implementation and effectiveness of community-based interventions for paediatric HIV care and treatment, where the HIV prevalence rate is 3.8%. The activity, holding at the Landmark Hotel in Rivers State, brought together 84 LGA staff from 14 LGAs, comprising medical officers of Health, RH supervisors, HIV desk officers, M&E officers and LACA managers and representatives from Rivers State MoH, SASCP, EGPAF, PATA, IHVN, and SFH.

The Permanent Secretary for the Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr Mekele Igwe in her welcome remarks appreciated the effort of the PBP project and SFH for this initiative. She noted that this approach will make a meaningful difference in the lives of mothers, children, and adolescents affected by HIV in the state. Goodwill messages were also presented by the various organisations in attendance. This activity provided a platform to align strategies, increase awareness of national HIV Testing Services (HTS) guidelines, and promote integrated case management systems that cater to the unique needs of children and adolescents living with HIV. Interactive sessions with the participants focused on crucial areas such as ethical and confidential HIV counselling, strengthened referral and linkage systems, adherence support, and overcoming barriers to HTS access and integration of services into the PHC. The PBP Project will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in Nigeria’s fight against paediatric HIV by equipping stakeholders with the tools, knowledge, and collaborative structure needed.
