Poetry, tool for peace, unity — SFH

Tribune, 22 March 2025

The Managing Director, Society for Family Health (SFH), Dr Omokhudu Idogho says poetry is an instrument of change that must be taken seriously for a better society.

Idogho said this on Saturday in Jalingo, when he joined secondary school students to celebrate the 2025 World Poetry Day with a poetry recitation competition among schools.
Represented by Aisha Dadi, the MD noted that this year’s celebration with the theme ‘Poetry as a Bridge for Peace and Inclusion’ emphasised the power of words in fostering unity, harmony and peace in the society.

Empowering Nigeria’s adolescent girls for leadership

Guardian, 20 March 2025

In Nigeria, a reproductive health project initiative backed by the European Union (EU) and UNICEF is offering a ray of hope to adolescent girls, particularly in Adamawa…

According to Dr Aisha Dadi, Director of Pediatrics and Adolescent Health at the Society for Family Health (SFH), HIV prevalence among adolescents has risen from 0.2 per cent in 2018 to 1.3 per cent.
It is worrying to note that adolescent girls are disproportionately affected with a prevalence rate four times higher than that of boys.
The STAR-C project by SFH is tackling this issue head-on by building resilience among adolescents living with HIV.

SFH ACTIVITIES

SFH at Pharma West Africa 2025 Conference and Exhibition

SFH was proud to participate in the Pharma West Africa 2025 conference and exhibition, a pivotal gathering of industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators dedicated to strengthening Africa’s healthcare systems. Our Managing Director, Dr. Omokhudo Idogho, delivered the keynote address on Universal Health Coverage (UHC): Bridging Healthcare Policy, Practice, and People, where he emphasised the vital role of the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare financing in achieving UHC. His speech underscored the importance of sustainable financing models and public-private partnerships in ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare.

The conference featured engaging panel discussions that tackled key issues, particularly the challenges within the pharmaceutical supply chain. Experts explored strategies to enhance supply chain resilience and efficiency, with a strong focus on digital innovations that streamline processes, improve transparency, and close gaps in healthcare delivery. The event also showcased cutting-edge advancements in the sector, reinforcing the need for innovation in achieving sustainable health solutions.
SFHACCESS made a strong impact at the exhibition, highlighting our diverse range of healthcare solutions. Attendees engaged with our WaterGuard Plus water purification solution, TopMal anti-malarial treatment, and our growing portfolio of non-communicable disease (NCD) drugs and sexual wellness products. Additionally, AccessCare, our telemedicine app, gained significant attention for its role in making medical consultations more accessible, while SFH Access Logistics was introduced as a key initiative to enhance pharmaceutical supply chain efficiency. The Pharma West Africa Conference reaffirmed the power of collaboration in shaping the future of healthcare in Africa and advancing the goal of Universal Health Coverage.

SFH Strengthens HIV Response in Gombe and Conducts Biannual Organisational Improvement Assessment of CBOs

Society for Family Health (SFH), as a Sub-Recipient (SR) to the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), hosted the 2025 Strategic Review Meeting for the Global Fund GC7 HIV project in Gombe State. The four-day engagement, held from March 18–21, 2025, provided a crucial platform to evaluate programme progress, address challenges, and refine strategies to enhance HIV prevention, treatment, and support services for both general and key populations in Gombe.

Beyond programme assessment, the meeting strengthened partnerships with community-based organisations (CBOs) and deepened collaboration with key state actors, including Gombe State Agency for the Control of AIDS (GOMSACA) and the State AIDS and STI Control Programme (SASCP).
The CBOs, comprising representatives from DAPHO, THEDI, KISHIMI, KNIGHTINGALE, and GAMUNAN shared powerful insights on how their collaboration with SFH has expanded HIV testing services, increasing accessibility for at-risk populations, optimised data collection tools, ensuring more accurate reporting and decision-making and strengthened outreach efforts, bringing HIV prevention and treatment services closer to the communities that need them the most.
SFH and its partners made bold commitments to further strengthen HIV interventions in Gombe by enhancing stakeholder engagement to improve service delivery and sustainability, scaling up HIV testing and outreach efforts to improve case identification, providing additional mentorship and capacity-building for healthcare workers and developing a structured work plan to address programme challenges with clear justifications.
SFH reaffirmed its dedication to achieving the 95-95-95 targets in Gombe, contributing to Nigeria’s goal of ending HIV as a public health threat by 2030. The insights gained from this review and CBO assessment will guide future implementation strategies, reinforcing SFH’s relentless commitment to epidemic control, sustainability, and community-driven impact.

SFH GF Malaria Project Successfully Completes Adamawa SMC and Integrated SMC-ITN Microplanning in Niger and Taraba States

Society for Family Health (SFH) Global Fund Malaria Project has completed the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) microplanning in Adamawa State and the integrated SMC-ITN microplanning in Niger and Taraba States. This milestone underscores SFH’s commitment to ensuring strategic, data-driven, and community-focused planning in malaria elimination efforts across Nigeria.

The microplanning exercise, which took place from 11th to 25th March 2025, played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the efficient and seamless implementation of the upcoming SMC-ITN mass campaign. The microplanning process brought together state malaria programme teams, local health officials, community leaders, and implementing partners to map out operational plans, logistics, and resource allocation for the integrated campaign.
Key achievements of the microplanning process include:
  • Enhanced Coordination – Ensured synergy between SMC and ITN distribution, optimising resources and minimising duplication of efforts.
  • Data-Driven Targeting – Identified high-burden areas and prioritised intervention strategies to reach vulnerable populations effectively.
  • Capacity Strengthening – Built the technical expertise of state teams, reinforcing state ownership and sustainability of malaria programs.
  • Community Engagement – Strengthened involvement of local stakeholders, ensuring higher acceptance and demand for malaria prevention interventions.
  • Operational Efficiency – Developed clear logistics and supervision structures to improve campaign effectiveness and impact.
The microplanning sessions culminated in debriefing meetings with key state officials, including the honourable commissioners for health, permanent secretaries, directors of public health, programme managers, and malaria partners. The state representatives expressed satisfaction with SFH’s leadership, technical expertise, and collaborative approach, emphasising the value of partnerships in delivering a well-structured and impactful malaria intervention.
As SFH continues to lead in malaria prevention and control, the successful execution of these microplanning activities reinforces the importance of structured planning in large-scale public health campaigns. With the groundwork firmly established, Adamawa, Niger, and Taraba States are well-positioned for a high-impact malaria mass campaign, bringing Nigeria one step closer to a malaria-free future.

SFH hosts Inter-school Quiz Competition for World Water Day

In celebration of World Water Day 2025, Society for Family Health hosted an interschool quiz competition at the Karu LGA Secretariat, Nasarawa State, on the 21st of March 2025, as part of our ongoing commitment to promoting safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) education.

In attendance at this event were dignitaries from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Mr Charles Olusoji who represented the Permanent Secretary, the Executive Chairman, Karu LGA, Barr. Aliyu Madaki, and his deputy, Hon. Ibrahim Bulus.  We also had with us the Turaki of Karu representing the Esu of Karu, Pharm. (Dr.) Luka Panya Baba, alongside other directors from the LGA secretariat. This competition brought together students from schools that participated in Phase 3 of the WASH for Healthy Lives (W4HL) project in Karu and Nasarawa LGAs, Nasarawa State. Through this engaging and educational quiz, students showcased their knowledge of safe water systems, hygiene best practices, environmental sanitation, and disease prevention, which are all essential topics covered in the W4HL intervention.
By participating in this competition, students were expected to deepen their understanding of the vital role clean water plays in public health and sustainable development. This quiz aimed to inspire students to take ownership of their health and hygiene while promoting positive change in their schools, homes, and communities. The competition showed that the students are equipped with the right knowledge and skills and also highlighted and rewarded outstanding students who demonstrated exceptional understanding of WASH concepts, motivating them to become WASH champions. This is important because we believe it will contribute to a future where clean water and sanitation are accessible to everyone.
