SFH ACTIVITIES
Gates Foundation Country Impact Team Engage Stakeholders in Recent Kano State Visit
The country impact team from the Gates Foundation recently paid a visit to Kano State. The purpose of this visit is to gain a more grounded understanding of the implementation of family planning programmes across the state, observe the impact of ongoing investments, and engage directly with key stakeholders, including beneficiaries, healthcare providers, and community members. The visit included field visits to health facilities and communities where family planning services are being delivered by CPs & PPMVs and the Central Medical store where family planning commodities are stored in the State’s Drugs and Medical Consumable Supply Management Agency (DMCSA). They also had interactive sessions with direct beneficiaries of the Foundation’s investments. The Gates Foundation country impact team was particularly interested in observing how each partner is translating programme objectives into actionable, high-impact interventions that align with the broader goals of increasing mCPR, reducing unmet need for family planning, and improving maternal and child health outcomes in Kano State.

SFH Strengthens State Ownership in Microplanning for Integrated SMC and ITN Campaigns in Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina
In a bid to enhance state ownership in malaria control, Society for Family Health (SFH) provided technical assistance to Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina States in microplanning for the integrated Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) and Insecticide-Treated Net (ITN) campaign, held from February 25th to March 10th, 2025. This initiative developed a roadmap for seamless campaign implementation, ensuring maximum impact. As Nigeria continues its journey toward devolving malaria interventions to state governments, SFH remains committed to providing technical expertise and capacity-building support. By equipping states with knowledge and tools for campaign planning and execution, SFH reinforces sustainability, accountability, and a targeted approach to malaria elimination. A key component was capacity building, where state teams were trained in data-driven microplanning, resource allocation, monitoring, and community engagement. Strengthening state malaria programmes ensures independent campaign execution, reducing reliance on donor agencies. This approach fosters long-term sustainability and prepares states to take full responsibility for malaria control.

SFH IntegratE Project Supports Kaduna State Government to Review its TSTS Policy
Nigeria, like most low- and middle-income countries, suffers from shortages of human resources for health. Trained and skilled providers are inadequate to meet the healthcare needs of the population. This has necessitated policy change to allow higher cadre health professionals to either share or shift some of their tasks to lower cadres to ensure service delivery is more democratised towards achieving Universal Health Coverage. Consequently, in 2014, the Nigerian government approved a Task Shifting Task Sharing (TSTS) Policy with subsequent domestication across states of the country. Kaduna State domesticated the policy in 2017 and has since benefitted from such a bold move. As part of efforts to align the Kaduna State TSTS Policy (2017) with the national framework, a three-day workshop was held in Abuja to review the policy, identify gaps, and ensure alignment. The workshop aimed to analyse key findings from the landscape assessment to inform policy updates, engage stakeholders in identifying challenges, best practices, and priority areas for revision, draft updated policy provisions to strengthen health service delivery, and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aligned with national guidelines for effective implementation.
The workshop enjoyed the attendance and participation of senior government officials from multiple Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the state. Key among them were the State Commissioner of Health, Hajia Umma K. Ahmad; Permanent Secretary, Director Generals of Health Agencies, Directors of Department of the Ministry, Senior Officials from Primary Health Care Board, Civil Service Commission, Office of the SSG, Regulatory Agencies including PCN. Others included professional associations, ward development committees representing the community, and implementing partners including SFH, PSN, WHO, HSDF, Pathfinder, and FCDO Lafiya. The Honourable Commissioner chaired the opening event, and in her welcome remarks, commended SFH and PSN for supporting the workshop, noting that the support was a welcome response to the persistent shortage of higher cadre personnel. Presentations included highlights of the goals, rationale, and scope of the TSTS. There was also a presentation on the TSTS landscape analysis to provide updates on progress and gaps in the implementation of the existing policy. There were multiple group work and plenary presentations and reviews of new ideas to access fresh input to the reviewed policy document. More tasks were transferred to the community structures, which highlights the growing trust that government and the public have in the health services provided by CPs, PPMVs, and community interlocutors. This shift is essential to the impactful work that SFH is doing. The support for this policy review demonstrates the commitment of the IntegratE Project to the implementation of SFH strategic plan and increasing the private sector’s role in healthcare delivery within the state. Our support to Kaduna State through this investment to mobilise additional resources for the policy validation and development of the implementation plan reflects our leadership in the human resource sector in the state.

IntegratE project conducts Qualitative Supportive Supervisory Visit to trained providers in Lagos state
The Lagos IntegratE team recently conducted a Qualitative Supportive Supervisory Visit (QSSV) in Lagos State. The visit, which is one of the essential components of the IntegratE project, is designed to support, coach and mentor clients on the provision of family planning and primary health care (PHC) services in accordance with the national guidelines of the health care service provision in the country. To ensure that trained healthcare providers gain practical experience in delivering quality Family Planning (FP) and primary healthcare services, the team worked within Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin, Apapa, Oshodi-Isolo, and Alimosho LGAs.
The exercise aimed to assess the performance of providers in the provision of quality family planning and primary health care services, identify strengths and gaps, and enhance the quality of service by providing coaching and mentorship to trained providers regarding the gaps identified in the delivery of quality family planning and primary healthcare services. A total of 24 trained providers were visited while the team provided hands-on training by simulation of role-play (practicals) where providers were asked to repeat the process. The M&E team also conducted data quality assessments during the visits to ensure quality documentation and reporting. The providers were also coached on proper documentation where necessary. The exercise was a successful one as providers gained knowledge and confidence in providing family planning and primary health care services, as well as improved counselling and infection prevention skills.
