Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future (O3) Education for Health and Well-being (EHW) Project

Ended
The UNESCO O3 Education for Health and Well-being (EHW) Programme was aimed at supporting the delivery of good quality Family Life HIV Education (FLHE). It empowered adolescents and young people, building their agency while they developed skills, knowledge, attitudes necessary for preventing HIV, reducing unintended pregnancies, and eliminating gender-based violence in schools. The project was implemented in three (3) LGAs in Taraba state- Jalingo, Gassol and Wukari.
Key approach and objectives
The UNESCO O3 Education for Health and Wellbeing (EHW) program adopted a comprehensive, multi-sectoral strategy that emphasised collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Taraba State Ministry of Education (SMoE), Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB), community leaders, educators, parents, and students. Core components of our approach included advocacy and partnership-building, development of culturally appropriate resources, social and behavioral change communication, and capacity building for teachers, counsellors, FLHE desk officers, quality assurance (QA) officers, and EMIS officers. The programme also engaged schools and communities through targeted activities and utilised interactive digital platforms to reach and educate adolescents and young people.
The objectives were as follows:
  • Support an enabling policy and institutional environment for the implementation of school health programmes that include EHW and prevention of school violence.

  • Support scale-up and strengthen the delivery of accurate, rights-based, gender-transformative, and good-quality teaching and learning on EHW and school violence prevention.

  • Empower AYP and respect their right to make decisions and drive change in their lives and communities using digital innovations.

  • Promote the creation of safer, inclusive school and community environments with linkages to accessible, youth-friendly SRH services.

  • Strengthen programme implementation through evidence generated from monitoring, evaluation, research, and learning.
Notable achievements/success metrics
As part of its efforts to promote Education for Health and Wellbeing/Family Life HIV Education (EHW/FLHE) in Taraba State, the programme trained 1,353 in-service teachers and 27 education officers across 121 schools on FLHE curriculum delivery and school-based violence prevention, strengthening institutional capacity. A total of 93,380 students were reached with life skills-based HIV and FLHE education through classroom sessions and assembly talks. Community engagement efforts included dialogues with 99 traditional and religious leaders on shifting harmful gender and social norms, and a sensitisation session with 1,990 parents on adolescent reproductive health. A policy engagement meeting brought together 40 representatives from key sectors to enhance intersectoral alignment and ownership of the EHW/FLHE agenda. Additionally, the organisation supported Taraba’s first state-wide poetry competition in celebration of 2025 World Poetry Day, engaging students from eight schools and promoting peace and inclusion through creative expression.
