IntegratE

2017- Present

The IntegratE project, supported by Gates Foundation, is being implemented across 11 Nigerian states: Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Borno, Enugu, Nasarawa, and Niger. The project since 2017 serves as a proof of concept that Community Pharmacists (CPs) and Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs), when properly trained and supported, can effectively deliver quality family planning (FP) services to women and primary healthcare (PHC) services to children under five in underserved communities.

Key Approach and Objectives
IntegratE adopts a comprehensive implementation strategy including stakeholder engagement, capacity building for CPs and PPMVs, supportive supervision, quarterly review meetings, use of IEC materials for awareness and community mobilisation through Interpersonal Communication Agents (IPCAs). The project also conducts medical outreaches to reach women and caregivers directly in their communities.
Its key objective is to pilot innovative models for delivering quality FP and PHC services through community-based providers, improve access and uptake of these services, and generate evidence to inform policy changes at the state and federal levels. The ultimate goal is to institutionalise and scale this model by 2026.

Notable Achievements/Success Metrics
To date, IntegratE has trained 863 Community Pharmacists and 4,312 PPMVs. These providers have delivered FP services to over 834,523 women, including 274,013 new clients. Over 2.9 million condoms have been distributed, 186,281 injectable contraceptives administered, 551,916 oral pills dispensed, and 41,573 implants inserted, resulting in 220,048 couple years of protection and 63,373 unintended pregnancies averted.
On PHC, over 551,306 children under five received services. More than 435,828 were tested for malaria using RDT, and 331,925 treated with ACT. For diarrhea, 160,045 children received ORS and Zinc; 58,365 were treated for pneumonia with Amoxicillin DT. Additionally, 144,302 caregivers received nutrition counseling, and 903 out of 8,039 presumptive TB cases were confirmed and placed on treatment.
