TOTALENERGIES UPSTREAM NIGERIA LTD AND PARTNERS IN COLLABORATION WITH SOCIETY FOR FAMILY HEALTH AND THE OGUN STATE GOVERNMENT DELIVERS HEALTH & ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS TO ADOLESCENT GIRLS

The Adolescent-360-TotalEnergies Health and Economic Empowerment project was funded by the TotalEnergies and partners as a One-year, two-phased approach program, implemented by Society for Family Health (SFH) and designed in line with the Ministry of Health Adolescent Health program to deliver youth-friendly health services and empower adolescent girls in Ogun State to reach their life aspirations.

The project centered its activities on two major approach involving delivering youth-friendly health services to adolescent girls in Nine communities of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun and in-depth economic skills training to selected adolescent girls within the age bracket of 17- 19 years from the communities of intervention.

In the first six months of the project implementations, 12,499 Adolescent girls were reached with health messages out of which 2,962 Girls attended the Love, Life & Health (LLH) classes which seeks to provide a safe haven for young adolescent girls to discuss issues such as health, emotions, relationship affecting them directly. The LLH classes also served as a medium to provide ‘Soft’ Economic skills for the young adolescent girls, which can be deployed by them to make economic gains to meet their immediate needs. During the one year of the project, 889 adolescent girls’ skills were built to generate economic gains.

In the course of the project 3,776 adolescent girls from the nine communities access youth-friendly health services of which, 2,834 girls were counselled and 274 girls treated for  STIs.

The second phase of the program intervention selected Thirty-Five (35) girls from the phase one intervention, who underwent an intensive six-month vocation skills training in Catering and Fashion designing, interjected with training on Gender safeguarding and Entrepreneurial Skills.

The culmination of the project with the final graduation of these 35 Adolescents beneficiaries of this project will take place on the 27th of April 2023 at The Conference Hotel, Abeokuta, Ogun State with the handing over of Start-Up kits to each successful graduates of the project. The Start-Up Kits will enable these adolescent girls who have been equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to immediately utilize their abilities in making economic gain benefiting them and their communities, thereby enhancing the economic indices of not only their communities but also Nigeria at large.
