SFH ACTIVITIES

Kwara Commissioner for Health Commissions Renovated SFH Offices at the Ministry of Health; Reinforcing Commitment to Sustainability and Collaboration.

As part of efforts to foster sustainability and strengthen collaboration with government stakeholders, Society for Family Health (SFH) through the Global Fund N-THRIP project as a sub-recipient to the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) has renovated six office spaces within the Kwara State Ministry of Health, including those of the State AIDS and STIs Control Programme (SASCP). SFH operates from office spaces generously provided by the Ministry, and in recognition of the building’s aging structure, undertook the renovation to create a more conducive and functional workspace. Although the renovation is still ongoing, the offices have reached a stage where staff can resume work. To mark this milestone, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina El-Imam, formally commissioned the newly renovated spaces.

She was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and was led on a tour of the improved facilities by the SFH State Team Lead and the SASCP State AIDS Programme Coordinator. During the commissioning, SFH State Team Lead, Dr Owen Omede, thanked the Honourable Commissioner and the Ministry of Health for providing office spaces to the project team. He highlighted that the gesture reflects a strong partnership and enhances coordination, government ownership, and sustainability of the HIV response in Kwara State. He reaffirmed SFH’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry to improve health outcomes and strengthen the fight against HIV. Dr El-Imam expressed appreciation for SFH’s efforts, noting that the organisation could have chosen to set up offices elsewhere but chose to remain within the Ministry, a gesture she described as a strong show of commitment to sustainability and government partnership. She commended SFH for not leaving the spaces as they were met and praised their efforts to make them better. The Honourable Commissioner reaffirmed her commitment to fostering collaboration and ensuring better health outcomes for all Kwarans, including Ministry staff and thanked SFH for supporting the Ministry’s vision through the renovation project.

SFH Trains 55 TBAs on Community Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services in Rivers state.

As part of its commitment to ending Paediatric HIV and strengthening community health systems, Society for Family Health (SFH), through the Paediatric Breakthrough Partnership (PBP) Project, conducted a three-day capacity-building training for traditional birth attendants (TBAs) in Rivers State. The training brought together 55 TBAs and relevant stakeholders at both the federal and state levels, with a shared goal to accelerate the integration of TBAs into the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) response at the community level. The training was designed to equip TBAs with essential knowledge and skills for identifying, counselling, and linking HIV-positive mothers and their infants to care. The Programme Manager for the Rivers State AIDS and STIs Control Programme, Dr Ufuoma Edewor and the Programme Manager for Rivers State Agency for the Control of AIDS (RIVSACA), Dr Francis Naaziga, in their opening remarks, reiterated the unique role of TBAs as trusted providers in many communities and emphasised their integration into PMTCT programmes as a game-changer in ensuring that no woman or child is left behind in the HIV response. Dr Ibimina C. Tonye-LeggJack, Programme Manager – PBP, gave a comprehensive overview of the project and its objectives. Afterwards, participants were taken through the national guidelines for HIV Testing Services (HTS) by Dr Belinda Yayork and learned how to provide people-centred, ethical, and confidential counselling, contributing to more respectful and stigma-free healthcare environments.

A key highlight of the training was the establishment of a referral network between TBAs and nearby healthcare facilities. This system is designed to ensure that HIV-exposed infants receive timely testing and treatment, effectively closing gaps in the continuum of care from community to clinic. In addition, participants explored the fundamentals of PMTCT and the specific roles TBAs play in prevention efforts. Emeka Akamagwuna and Edwin Oraluga, the project M&E specialists, explained how to accurately document and report data using standardised tools. Practical sessions further strengthened their capacity to recognise and refer HIV-reactive cases encountered in their practice settings. The three-day workshop was engaging, hands-on, and grounded in peer learning, creating a space for reflection, experience-sharing, and renewed commitment. By the close of the training, participants expressed appreciation for the experience and pledged to be change agents in their communities, promoting safe motherhood and working toward an HIV-free generation.

SWIFT Project Empowers PPMVs Through Business Fair, Financial Literacy and Digital Innovation in Lagos

Society for Family Health (SFH), through its SWIFT Project, hosted a transformative Vendor Management Inventory Organisation (VMIO) Business Fair and Business Development Week in Lagos State from 24 June to 2 July 2025. Held at Ai-Royal Hotel and the SFH Innovation Hub, the multi-day engagement brought together 33 Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) from the Alimosho and Ikorodu clusters, aiming to boost their capacity in inventory management, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and access to digital platforms. The event featured a practical demonstration of the VMIO platform, delivered jointly by Shelf-Life and SFH Access, showcasing the power of tech-driven inventory management in improving supply chains for community-level medicine vendors. The live onboarding of PPMVs onto the VMIO system marked a major milestone in promoting real-time stock visibility and transparent pharmaceutical practices. Speaking at the event, Dr Filusi, Zonal Director of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), led an orientation on the role of regulatory compliance and professional development in strengthening community health outcomes. In her presentation, Jennifer Ladokun, SFH IntegratE Regional Manager, shared a comprehensive overview of the SWIFT Project’s efforts to integrate PPMVs into the broader health system, underscoring the value of innovation in expanding access to quality sexual and reproductive health services.

Further enriching the fair were financial literacy and entrepreneurship development sessions, led by Christiana Andrew Odeh and Omotola Nafisat Ajao respectively. Christiana simplified critical financial concepts from budgeting and record-keeping to credit and taxation while Omotola’s session inspired participants with strategies to build a growth mindset, recognise market opportunities, and strengthen resilience in business. In a strong show of support, representatives from WEMA Bank, Sterling Alternative Bank, and TillitPaycient engaged participants on loan opportunities and financial products tailored to PPMVs, bridging the gap between financial services and informal health businesses. By the end of the week-long engagement, all 33 participating PPMVs had been onboarded onto the VMIO platform, received hands-on training in business operations and inventory tracking, and were connected to regulatory and financial stakeholders. Participants left the event with renewed confidence, clearer goals, and practical tools to improve the sustainability and efficiency of their businesses marking another step forward in SFH’s mission to strengthen grassroots healthcare delivery across Nigeria.
