The 26th September is World Contraception Day (WCD). A day created in order to raise awareness of contraception all over the world, and to empower both men and women of sexual reproductive age to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health.

It’s 10 Years Later !!!

Launched in 2007, this day reminds SFH Nigeria of the mission to provide health access and continue to be at the centre of making choices available to every Nigerian.

The annual worldwide campaign centres around a vision where every pregnancy is wanted. Allowing women to choose whether, when, and how many children to have achieves progress on global health goals. It also helps break the cycle of poverty, and puts families, communities, and countries on a stronger, more prosperous and sustainable path

SFH is particularly pleased that Nigeria has a large mix of contraceptives of  Condoms, Pills, implants, injectables, IUDs . Interestingly, most of these are intended for use before the act. How about after sex?

When the Unexpected Happens

This year SFH Nigeria brings to you Emergency Contraceptives (Postinor2). Also known as “Morning After Pill” or “Sex After Pill” Emergency contraception (EC) is a term used to describe contraceptive methods that can be used after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. Whether it is as a result of a broken condom, a moment of passion, a calendar miscalculation or the tragedy of rape, women frequently find themselves needing a second chance to prevent a pregnancy.

The most widely available EC method is levonorgestrel-alone pills; Nigeria was one of the first countries in the world to make emergency contraception available to women; the Society for Family Health began distribution of Postinor through pharmacies and drug vendors 20 years ago and important research on EC has been conducted in Nigerian universities.

Emergency contraceptives are of critical importance for women’s reproductive health globally. Every woman deserves a chance to prevent pregnancy

We urge you to talk about contraception and  promote family planning. This is  essential to securing the well-being and autonomy of women, while supporting the health and development of Nigeria.
